Hi!

First let me say I've really been enjoying Nehrim. I know some rudimentary German, so I've been able to play through relatively succsefully and understand most of what's going on.

I have however run into a problem. I collect the 2 shovels for Morten and bring them down to him, but he just yells at me to get away from the gate when I speak to him. From what I understand, the mages are supposed to attack when I come back down. I thought I might have missed something important along the way, since my German isn't perfect, and did a replay up to the part with the shovels using the English patch beta. I got the exact same problem. Could somebody help me out please? Is there a console command to start the mage attack script or something.
How did you obtain the soap? Have you provoked the mages?
To get the soap I climbed up the cliff and jumped onto the top of the wall with the guards, then just collected the pile of the stuff. I haven't done anything to the mages really, I tried shooting at them with my bow but couldn't hit them.

Yes, that's what triggered the bug (and has been made impossible with patch 1.0.2 or so - or have you still found a way to jump down to the soap with the patch?)

Were you shooting the mages through the window? And they didn't react?

No I haven't patched the game yet (but will now). Yes I did try to shoot at them through the window and got nothing. Do I need to start a new game/load an old save?
You need a save where you have not picked up the soap yet.

Ok thanks, unfortunately I don't have one anymore. Time to make another run through the dungeon :D

So THAT'S what Seifer mean!
I have the same issue where the mages don't react to to arrows being shot at them. Unless I am missing a step.

I plugged up the rat holes and turned in the first quest.
Then the guy with the helmet shows up with his problem.
Soap is the suggested solution. (no idea where to go, so I check the forums here, and guess I have to shoot the mages outside the gate)
- buy a bow, shoot at mages, they don't react.

am I missing something?

I even went back to a save point in the mines and replayed most of it - got the same non-reaction.

I think the problem is how people are going about getting the soap. Here is how I remember the sequence of events needing to happen:

What needs to happen is that you need to take a pot shot at the Mages after speaking with the guard about soap. That is when you need to shoot at them. What should occur is that you go up to the guard and ask about soap - he will basically tell you to piss off but the guard up on top of the gate structure will mention something about the soap being up there with him. Do not try to climb up to him just go to the open window and take a shot at the Mages. They will fireball the gate and knock the soap down to you. Then, later, after you have retrieved the shovels and are coming back down the hill the Mages should attack on their own accord. You reach a certain point on the road and it triggers them into attacking.
