I installed Oblivion, installed Shivering Isles, installed patch 1.2.0416, installed Nehrim, updated to 1.5.0.8.
I start Nehrim, start a new game, enter a name for my character, and when I click yes to confirm, it makes a strange sound that continues until I close it along with a pop-up that says Oblivion has stopped working.

Try downloading ( not installing ) Nehrim again. I think the Nehrim install file was corrupt, could be Oblivion too. Are you installing from DVD or what? Also you don't need the Shivering Isles for Nehrim.
I downloaded the 1.5.0.8 installer.
I re-installed Oblivion and Nehrim.
Same problem.
I managed to get it to run by disabling my soundcard. While this is a solution, it is not a good solution. I would like to have audio while playing the game.

So it runs well with your sound card disabled? Sometimes errors can occur when running an onboard sound device and a sound card at the same time. Check your BIOS and disable the onboard sound card. Just an idea.
Yes, the motherboard HD audio, as well as the HD audio on my video cards, is/are disabled.
It is strange, as the exact same configuration works perfectly in Oblivion.
