Hi there
I've just started - level 5, and am aiming to be some kind of Battle Mage. At the starter mine I used the pickaxe so have developed my Blunt to 30 while my blade is 26. My current best weapon is also Blunt, so I am inclined to train up Blunt and leave Blade. However in 2 separate posts here people have specifically said 'do not put effort into blunt'. With the magic to hone I can't really do both at this stage.
What do people think?

later on you really need the blade skill leveled up. so if i were you i'd start working on it, and forget blunt for a while. or you'll find you're having a really hard time when you reach that point in the MQ.

if you choose blunt some step in the MQ may be harder or challenging to complete but not impossible.

Sorry I had a change of plan and have concentrated purely on magic, leaving weapons completely. Will I still need Blade later in the MQ? I am level 17 and just starting Act 3.

Some enemies in the Southrealm have resistences to magicka, so don't expect it to be TOO easy (it will definitely be harder than the Northrealm).
Other than that, there shouldn't be much of a problem. You are required to carry a certain sword with you, but you are not required to use it.
