I got the latest update for oblivion, and installed nehirim without any problems. The game loads up fine but when i click start a new game it asks "would you like to start a new game? yes or no" After i click yes it just takes me right back to the main menu screen.
I have the same problem and don't know what to do..
Try all the steps listed in the ReadMe file under "Help, the game will not start".

First be sure that your installation went exactly as described here.
1. Possibility - Patch forgotten
Although Nehrim does not need Shivering Isles, Oblivion must be updated with the latest patch
(1.2.0416). If you use the Game of the Year Version of Oblivion, you may think that the newest
patch is automatically provided with it, but be aware: The GOTY edition only contains the latest
patch if you have installed Shivering Isles with it. If not, then install it or download the patch (for
Oblivion, not for Shivering Isles) from http://elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm and
install it.
2. Possibility - Wrong INI-Data Configuration
A common reason for this is that the file:
"My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini"
has some changes in it that will cause Nehrim not to work. The simplest solution is to rename this
file or move it (or delete it if it is certainly no longer needed), so Nehrim will not find it. The next
time Nehrim starts it will create a whole new, fresh and accurate Oblivion.ini. Then you must,
however, again reset any new game settings and ini tweaks you previously had or want to use.
3. Possibility – Wrong game files activated
In the option “Data Files”, make sure that only the files Nehrim.esm and NehrimData.esp are
enabled. ALL OTHER GAME FILES MUST BE DISABLED.
4. Possibility - Corrupt Oblivion Installation
Sometimes the Oblivion installation gets damaged, which also affects Nehrim. For instance you
may have moved the Oblivion folder or reinstalled Windows without having uninstalled your
games. It may help to make a fresh installation of Oblivion.
5. Possibility – Installed into the wrong folder
Nehrim should not be installed into the Oblivion folder or into the Program/Program Files (x86)
folders. If this is the case with you then uninstall Nehrim and install it into a different folder.

I attempted to change the order of the DATA section in the launcher, but the launcher (Nehrim version) would not allow me to tick or untick anything.
As well, I am experiencing the same issue. Should we translate our request to German and post it in the german section in hope of someone with more expertise?

the possible solution:
Open up Data Files in the launcher
Check all the checkboxes (Nehrim.esm, NehrimData.esm, NehrimEnglish.esm). It can be hard to do, so try clicking on different points within ckeckboxes.
Press Accept
Launch the game

I alredy tried all the above and none worked for me. Any idea what to do?
I deleted all my mods and reinstalled Oblivion. I have a GOTY edition and it has the right patch. I uncheked the Oblivion.esm in the Nehrim launcher and cheked the Nehrim.esm the NehrimData.esp and the NehrimEnglish.esp. I created the oblivion.ini with the Nehrim launcher. Yet i still cant start a new game. After i click yes it just drop me back to the main menu.

Did you install as admin (if you're using Vista/Win7)?
Have you tried changing the various video options in the Launcher? I'd try disabling HDR first, if that doesn't work, disable AA, etc.
Double check that you didn't install in any folder that starts with Program.
Try disabling all sound and relaunch.
Reload the bink video dlls perhaps?
You may have done these things already, just wanted to try and help you think of every option.
