When I launch the game the opening menu appears quickly as usual but when I click "New Game" and confirm "Explore Enderal" the text disappears and the game hangs on that image indefinitely, never starting the new game.

I had the same issue as you, I uninstalled Skyrim and SKSE on steam completly, re-downloaded Skyrim, installed SKSE and Enderal, and it worked, for some time (game crash on another loading screen, after ~20mn of game).

EDIT : a Moderator told me in my post that SKSE is already provided in Enderal, and that you souldn't reinstall SKSE on steam.
Tried fresh install. Didn't work. Still stalling.
So I figured it out for anybody experiencing this issue.

Turns out the problem was caused by a corrupted download of EnderalEN.gz. To fix this problem, uninstall, redownload and try to install again.

I first noticed suspected this was it when the script extender that came with the file wouldn't launch after I deleted the steam install of SKSE (because it apparently comes with Enderal). After that I noticed that when installing Enderal, it would only unpack Meshses.bsa and then complete. This led me to suspect it was either a problem with the base game or with the unpacker that comes with the launcher, as clearly the unpacker wasn't completing or is getting an exception and the launcher is taking that to mean it completes (As a note to the mod team: You might want to check that your launcher is handling exceptions properly. It should not be saying it completed install if the unpacker experiences a problem). From there, I simply figured that the unpacker wasn't working right because of a corrupted download, so I re-downloaded.

If you yourself are experiencing this issue, I recommend downloading via torrent. It's less likely to give you a problem like this.

Hope this helps someone with the same problem.
