I'm apparently not that good at riddles. My current riddle and what I have attempted so far below:

"At the beginning of the current, in the west a grand stone with an elevated, bare tree."

I figured the first bit meant either the river mouth or the river's source, so I poked around up and down the two rivers near Riverville looking for leafless trees on hilltops. While I found a leafless tree at the river mouth of the river to the west of town (by a circle of stones with a skeleton in the middle) it wasn't elevated and I didn't see any new riddles nearby. I wasn't able to find any other promising trees farther up that west river or anywhere along the west branch of the river that runs through the town.
I also checked around the western island in the bay in case that's what the riddle meant, but no luck there either. Frankly I'm at a loss. I must have missed something, but I have no idea what.

Yes, it can be a bit confusing. However, this is how it should work:

On the same level, where the river runs into the sea is farm where you found the boy. Behind the farm, in western direction is a mountainous area and atop of one mountain - quite good to see - is a large bare tree. Climb up there and look for a ruin in the (farther) vicinity of the tree.

There is a shrine right at the sea, next to the wheat field where the boy tends to hang around. On the backside of the altar is a little stone plaque with the next part of the riddle on it.

I think it is not the shrine you are talking about (it has no 'inside'). You can see the actual shrine from where the can is. It is a short way north of it, even illuminated with candles.

The shrine is obviously the ... yes, shrine directly near the beach... and from this place you should see the tree in the nord-west. Around the tree you should find the next hint... i found it not... but when you search there in a bigger circle you can find the treasure chest without this hint...
