I am at a loss on what to do with this quest, I have cleared every accessible cabin, obtained and read all 7 notes, killed every boneshredder, searched every square nano-meter of the island and there doesn't seem to be any sign of what happened to the 2 girls at all or how to enter the locked buildings or the door behind the barrier. Any help would be appreciated.

they are at the north end of the island near the coast i believe. if i recall correctly they are near some alter with standing stones dotted around it

Just did the quest myself: you have to look around the beach surrounding the island. There is a circle of stone pillars, and if you get close to it, two undead should attack you. These are the two girls from the letters, and each one drops an amulet. You are then able to recite the amulets' inscription at the barrier, which will disable it.

Ah thanks, it appears they don't appear until you get right to that spot, at least for me.
