Anyway, in the midst of the very first mission, Celebro fell down a ravine and won't follow me on my way up. Is he necessary for the first quest or can I just move on? If he is necessary It's not like the game is broken, but I do have to make my character all over again, which is a bit of an inconvenience.

Make a save (make it can be saved if the other option does not work). Try to continue, and see if either Celebro will appear back at your side, or if the Quest updates normally.
