Here's the problem: I have all the other ingredients for this quest, but I can't get the rancid oil. I found a key in the alchemist's lab, it vanished when I picked it up, but I don't think it's in my inventory. If it is supposed to open the cabinet in the lab, it's not working. I've searched everywhere for a locked cabinet (mentioned in the alchemist's note), but can't find one anywhere. I'm hoping my game isn't bugged because I was really enjoying it and starting over would just suck. Please, someone just spell it out and tell me where the locked cabinet is. No cryptic answers, please. I'm really sick of combing through this section of the game... it has consumed too many hours already. Thanks in advance.

The Buckthorn Oil right? And you found the key behind the books on the bookshelf (the key on the desk is for something else) in the Alchemist lab and it isn't opening the locked wall cabinet in the alchemist lab? The key behind the books is supposed to be the key for that cabinet. If all else fails, MAKE A SAVE, then walk up to the cabinet, enter the console by hitting the ~ once (the "tilda" key, very upper left of your keyboard under ESC), then click on the cabinet itself, then type "unlock" (without the quotes), then HIT ENTER, then exit the console (same tilda key) and then try to access the cabinet.

Ok, I went back and tried it myself and the console command worked for me and didn't break the quest. YMMV.

Yes, the Buckhorn Oil. I was getting so frustrated, I couldn't think straight (I didn't even want to open the game to look it up). Glad you knew what I was talking about! That command worked. Thanks so much!

What quest is this? Where I can start this quest? I haven't found the quest in the wikia.

'Inside The Lion's Den'- one of the main quests. Maybe you're not that far in the main story to have the quest .

It is listed on Wikia Main Quests, but no article on it yet.

i hated that quest. mainly because

i moved the books in that bookcase, and the key moved with one of the books so i was unable to see it. so after searching for a while everywhere in the palace, in frustration i started throwing around stuff, and to my surprise there was the key, in the bookcase the very first place i checked. my head nearly imploded
