Install problems
Post by sir »
When I installed, oblivion.exe wasn't copied. I had to copy it and *.dll from the Oblivion directory manually. After that, running the game shows the first loading screen, then crashes. I can't get any further. No change after reinstalling. I can't find anything obviously wrong, but if the installer failed to copy some important files (Oblivion.exe), I can only assume that other parts of installation didn't happen.

The original Oblivion (1.2.0416) directory still works fine. Plain, non-Steam install.

Could someone make an md5sum or sha1sum file of a working installation (both the Oblivion and Nehrim directories), so I can see if any files are corrupt or missing? Does the installer create a logfile anywhere that might tell if any parts of the install failed but didn't show an error? It seems very strange that those binaries weren't copied.

Have you checked the md5 of the installer?

The installer's from the torrent, so it's fine. Torrents have built-in integrity checking.

I just copied all of Oblivion's .BSA files to Nehrim\Data, and the game starts now, so I suppose my guess was correct: the installer had more problems than just not copying the executable. Would be nice to figure out what's actually going on, because who knows what else might be amiss...

Well, lets say it this way:
Someone has managed to download (and install) a broken installer via torrent and is now searching for one of the cutscene videos on bethsoft forum. That should be impossible.

I don't have further insights into the installer, that is something for the SureAI Team.

This sounds like your Windows UAC has prevented the installer from accessing the Oblivion folder. Or the Oblivion path was wrong because you moved the Oblivion folder but didn't update the path in the registry.

Is that really the only way to fix all this?

I have an idea.. SureAI releases an updated installer that will have the player verify the Oblivion install folder, it will then check the registry and possibly update the entries IF NECESSARY, followed by installing the latest update for whatever version of Oblivion we have installed, then install Nehrim.

Seriously, even I can make an installer do that. It saves sooo much time, prevents a lot of hassle and it's relatively easy to do.

The installer already DOES check the Oblivion folder. It even checks that Oblivion is correctly patched. But some people choose to ignore that error window and go on.

What you want is to search on the whole hard disk for the right Oblivion folder. That would be harder to do with Innosetup.
