unable to level up

I killed the black cave troll and received a message that I had enough points to level up. It said to use the diary in my inventory. I am unable to find a diary. I have clicked on every button or menu item I could fine but nothing allows me to level up. The message keeps displaying on my screen. I kept going and met the wizard. But I don't think I can progress unless I can figure out how to level up. I would appreciate any help.

The diary is a book in your inventory that is specially marked when you can level up.
If you can't find it, please attach your game save file here.
You can find it at: C:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion\Saves. To upload it, put your ESS and the same named OBSE file in a ZIP file.
Note: Many different saved games will help you with most possible bugs, that can be eliminated by reloading, but not always the very latest ones.

I am on GOG not steam but I found a save settings file and my save file . I opened the game today but I have the same problem

Unfortunately, you sent us files in an unknown SAV format, which are not Nehrim savegame.
Game saves always consist of two files, an ess file and a same named obse file. You can find these in the game folder in the \Saves subfolder
On Steam, this is located at: C:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion\Saves
On GOG, this is located at: C:\...\GOG Games\Nehrim At Fate's Edge GOG\Saves
To upload the obse file to the forum, please pack both files into a (Zip) archive and attach it here. (see this example)

I am so sorry. I had trouble finding anything that looked like a save. Now I know where to look, I have made a new zip of the correct 2 files.

hi, welcome to the forum

- do you play with a very high resolution?
the inventory might (/will) geht buggy with anything higher than 1920 x 1080 ( i think)
you would still be able to see the diary

- your save looks fine an my end, maybe the diary is hidden for some reason;
the blue "buttons / items" in the inventory can hide subcategories.
(for example, keys are hidden by default - if you click the blue button they show up)

I was playing at 3840x2160. I reduced the resolution and restarted the game. I can now see the diary. However, when I click on it, it says I am not ready yet. But when I close the inventory I still have the message about clicking to level up.

Thank you for all your help but I think I will leave this game now as I have probably managed to bug it out with all my attempts to find the diary. You have done an amazing job with this mod considering the age of the game.

I might restart it at a lower resolution at some point.

It would be a shame to give up, but 1600x1024 or 1920x1080 should be perfectly adequate, for example.
At the time, something like 3840x2160 was hardly imaginable.
Keep in mind that the engine also does not support newer hardware and that the Oblivion engine crashes from time to time.
For this reason alone, it is important to save many different game states.
