I solved the problem by loading an earlier saved game. Still can't figure out why it happened.
I have been playing Enderal about a week. I just noticed that the health bar is displayed without any color in it, and if I am attacked I take no damage. I do not have god mode enabled, just to make sure I used the console to toggle god mode on and off (it was off to begin with) and nothing changed ...
