Something is messed up in your Skyrim/Enderal installation. Do you have any mods active? Uncheck/Disable them in the Enderal Launcher and you Modmanager/organizer and check it ingame.
Perhaps try to start a new game and check if the hero menu is working (you have to go through some long conversations, I know).

If it still no working uninstall the Enderal completely (not archiving!) via the launcher. Install Skyrim via Steam. Verify it's game cache: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_art ... -QEUH-3335
Remove the .inis from documents\mygames\skyrim.
Then run it to see if it works. If yes quit. If not you have done something wrong with the Skyrim installation.
Make sure you have the newest launcher A54: http://enderal.com/?lang=en
Download a fresh installation package (we recommend torrent) and install it with this instruction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwlSsjehgQA

I have the same problem with the "controlmap.txt" and the controls folder not existing. I have followed all the steps and no mods active, but still have same problem with opening the hero menu and just getting a blurry screen and a paused game.

("all the steps" includes a clean reinstall, yes?)

could you upload a manual (no quick- or auto) save?
found in ..\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Saves,
we'll need the skse and the ess, pack them to a rar or zip archive and attach them to a post here

This is an SKSE issue, yours wasn'tinstalled properly during the installation process. Either that, or you had SKSE preinstalled. Having different versions can mess things up. I would recommend a reinstall from a new installation package. Make sure Skyrim works, as soon as you've uninstalled Enderal.

I somehow fixed the hero menu shortly after posting my last post by reinstalling skyrim and then the launcher, but thanks for the help!
