Well, I will get Fallout New Vegas tomorrow, so I had to finish the main quest (I was kind of dragging it a bit, didn't want it to end)
I am playing Nehrim for almost 6 weeks now, every day a few hours a day.
Overall, this is one of the best games I played. I am kind of an old school RPG fan, my first RPG was Ultima Underworld. I rarely play games, the last RPG I played was Fallout 3.
Anyway, a few remarks:
1. It seems that the final part of the game has strong similarities with The Matrix trilogy. It's about fate/destiny, going in out of the world places, your love dies towards the end, and the final dialogue is pretty similar with the one at the end of The Matrix 1 and 3. And it's at sunrise, on two benches, same with the final scene in The Matrix Revolutions. So are you guys Matrix fans?
2. The main quest is very nice, but it has some really tedious parts. For example, the escaping from monastery part just sucked. It's over 1 hour of moving, jumping, and killing low level stuff. Same with the Soul Flayer temple. That was just nasty and I had to TCL my way through some parts.
3. There is very little fighting you have to do in the main quest. Most of the fighting part is done by your companions, and the only serious fight is at the very end. It is a bit frustrating to level up so much, get the beast gear, potions, etc. and not having to use them in the main quest.
4. The equipment is a bit unbalanced. For example, probably the best item in the game for a mage is the Shadow touch boots (or whatever they are called). The reason for that is that they increase your stamina, and your spell power increases to over 100% (in my case, 117%). Without the boots, the spell efficiency is 95% So those boots will make your fireballs significantly more powerful, and I played most of the game with them on.
5. Even though there are quite a few NPCs, most of them don't say anything. Would be nice if they told you more about themselves, their city, etc.
6. The side quests were mostly nice, except for the Darius treasure one which was just tedious (jumping over moving stuff sucks). I particularly liked the one where you have to find the brewer.
Well, that was about it, thank you everyone from the Nehrim team, you did an amazing job, and this is by far the best free game I ever played. What are your plans for the future? Do you plan to extend it, make a new mod, or maybe even your own game, using some other game engine such as Ogre3D or Unreal?
