Question about magic
Post by EbonKnight »
Hey guys,

I started off a half-aeterna character thinking they're about the only character race that can be made to look decent without spending half an hour in the facegen.. continued playing it as it turned out that magic is pretty much the driving force between the MQ.. and now, at level 14, decided it's too damn boring to play a mage and am seriously considering rolling up a sneaky/illusion character (the only fun chars to play outside combat/magic mods). Before I do that, though.. is there any cool and genuinely different/powerful spells awaiting at higher tiers to make the mage worth playing? I mean, yeah, I get it, by the time I get tier 4 spells, they'll be far deadlier than melee OR bow, and I've had no real trouble ever since I got my first spells ANYWAY, but the thing is.. they're excessively boring to spam.. I was hoping there are awesome spell effects like the fire wall the mage casts near the beginning (you know the one, no more spoilers).. I was sorely disappointed with the uselessness of
[+]
frostfinger's spell
and, generally, so far, the only fun thing has been using the arcane discharge. So.. to round off this long-winded post.. are there actually cool spells awaiting me or is it all gonna be more of the same vanilla oblivion-style spamming? Just so I know to start over :)
So, nobody, huh? Feel free to answer in a spoiler tag if need be, and don't get me wrong, the fun of playing a character (mechanics) has nothing to do with the fact this mod has so far been more fun/had better atmosphere/scripting than the original Oblivion. I'm just asking cause I wouldn't want to get my hopes up for some genuinely cool new stuff awaiting my mage only to find out 7th tier spells are excatly the same point-and-click stuff as tier 2, except, of course, doing more damage, and costing more mana. After all those cool magic/combat mods for oblivion, the vanilla-ish stuff is just grating.
Although I think I haven't seen every spell in the game I think that the animations are the same as in oblivion. Btw, a tier 7 spell with much more damage does not automatically cost more mana than a tier 3 spell with less damage. the use of mana gets more effective, if you will.

There is one new spell I haven't seen yet, it's called
[+]
Frost-sphere or ice-sphere (german: Frostsphäre)
, I think.

Perhaps someone who has it can tell if there is a new animation involved?

But away from the visual aspect, magic is much more powerful than in oblivion in the higher levels. It's fun, really!
Well yeah that spell
[+]
releases a little sphere which is like an ice time-bomb.. but I was sorely disappointed to find out it doesn't actually FREEZE targets and barely does anything at all
I was more thinking of stuff like walls of fire, AoE freezing and stuff like that.. what bugs me is that so far the chance to knock back/freeze/shock opponents is set in stone and not that high, it doesn't seem to raise with your level. Also, magic seems a tad too powerful (yeah I know, asking for walls of fire and then bitching about magic already being OP :P) so it's all just run at dudes, throw stuff, run back, throw more stuff, and hope for status effect so you can spam some more fire/ice/shock balls. More fun with my quasi sneaky character, so far. :/

Don't know If you have been to the Magic Monestary but there some new spells there
Blizzard is an AOE freeze spell(but only 10%)
If you want Higher chances just use lower rank spells and spam more
OR use paralyze
There is also inflame that is like a curse of suffering AOE

The only decent synergies you can get are with blizzard + fireball/inflame. blizzard + inflame is nice for large mobs in open spaces, and running up a narrow flight of stairs and casting blizzard near the bottom is a good way to bunch enemies up to make full use of fireball's small AOE
I know your Problem EbonKnight. After a few hours of gaming the spells are really boring. In the German Section someone writed that he wanted to convert midas magic spells of aurum to nehrim. But this isn´t easy. i would have done it, but my skills with CS are not high enough.
Yeah, midas would be awesome.. there is also a newer mod around that brings D&D style magic - you can't LEARN from people, but instead you pick classes such as warlock, druid etc and get magics as you level themed by your class.. pretty cool, though I guess, it wouldn't really thematically fit in Nehrim. Anyway, I decided to can my spellcaster for now and am having a blast with my assassin-type character.. the game itself is immensely fun, if we just had cooler combat it would downright be one of the best rpgs ever, not just mods.

Fights are a problem in Oblivion. The engine has it's limitations and it is impossible for SureAI to solve them. All they can do -and did- is to max out the possibilities.

Some aspects like the magic and barter system have seen a seriously work over by modders in the last years.
There are some complaints that SureAI did not incorporate such mods into Nehrim. I think that there can be no doubt that it was the right decision to finish&release Nehrim instead.
You can spend infinite time to include better mods and even develop new ones but at the end it is about getting it done before all motivation is gone. At some point you have to decide "This is the way it will be done. It may not be the best option but it works."

Nehrim can be modded and there are efforts going on to improve things.
As far as I can tell there is more work going on on complex things than on porting weapons, armor and body replacer. ;)
Maybe we will even see a Nehrim 2.0 in some years that has the best stuff included. 8)

The most annoying thing for me are the voices that call for three dozen mods even before seeing the in-game daylight for the first time.
Really, Nehrim is not Oblivion - especially not a heavily modded Oblivion with a three digit number of mods.
I hope that at least the "bigger" modders play the game to its end before porting mods that change large aspects of the game.
Yeah, I know what you mean. IMHO, aside from custom map markers, slightly better facegen (so that not every character you make looks retarded - old oblivion problem) and, of course, the combat, I wouldn't change anything.
