Ok, I have gone through the vast mine and defeated the courier involved in quest line "The Cry from the Deeps" and got the Nexus Axe of Insanity, but what am I supposed to do with it? The quest log implies that a good thing to do would be to return it to the mines - but can I actually "do" something with it in the mines - can I insert it somewhere, or simply drop it?
Please, help me out. I am terribly confused.

Where did you get the quest from? Might have a go myself.
It doesn't matter what you do, there is no special way to destroy the axe.

There exists a German mod named - "Ruf der Tiefe - Gutes Ende" - (english spoken: The Cry from the Deeps - Good Finish)
You have to go back to the blacksmith's workspace, put the Axe into the blacksmith's fire and gain a extra amount of experience!
I'm not sure if the mod works correct with the English version, but i think there should no complications appear.
The best way for complication-less usage is to activate "RufDerTiefeGutesEnde.esp" before the English patch.

Look here for the download.

arghh i went through the mine without having the quest and i read some things down there that gave me the quest, i haven't run into any courier anywhere, i hope i didn't break the quest by starting it from the wrong place, when i set it as the main quest i don't get a quest marker anywher on my map, i also got the quest called the renegade brother this way and don't get a quest marker anywhere so i have no idea what to do next for both these quests, any ideas anyone??
i have a bad habit of wanting to explore everything i see, i hope i don't mess up a bunch of quests that way.

I think there is no problem. Some quest you can get at different places.

It doesn't matter whether you start the quest in the mine or at Giliad or anywhere else. The game is not THAT buggy.
Was not being disrespectful. (played game 5 times to end of chapter 3 as different characters), just my sense of humour.
