Hello all and thanks again to the developpers for this awesome mod,
I have a minor concern about armors (as mentionned in another unrelated topic). I am only in the beginning but am a bit upset that all the ones I can found have more or less the same protection value: 1 for each piece except some torso pieces with 2, and robes at 3. The heavy armor pieces seem no more efficient than light ones. Is that on purpose? Is that because of the initial armor skill ratings (I wouldn't think so because they begin at 25, which is not that bad)? Will there be a greater difference between more advanced light and heavy armors?
Sorry about all those questions but the time will come when I have to increase one of my armor skill, and thus I try to see if there would be an advantage in choosing heavy armors (effectiveness, style, etc.). Would there be a german site where I could find at least pictures of the more common armors of Nehrim?

The effect of the armor is affected by the corresponding skill. I think they also differentiate more from each other with higher skill levels.
Yes I know but the skills begin at 25, this is not nothing and we should see a difference at this level... unless the strength of those skill has been reduced, so that 25 is equivalent to 5 in vanilla?
I don't exactly understand you.
The only reason you would switch to a certain armour type, would be your specialization. If you specialize in Magic, you should go for the Robe armour sets, if you specialize in rogue (;archer) you should go for the Leather (Light) Armour set, and if you specialize in either a Paladin or warrior go for the Plate mail.
Simply because those types give bonusses for the specialization, where plate mail gives strength and armour, robes give mana and destruction (per example)

Would it make more sense to you if I'd reveal that Warrior/Mage are my favorite characters?
Besides, there seems to be heavy robes armor in Nehrim (like the Templar vestment found in the Sanctum templar's shop, that you can "borrow" without anyone reacting).
I am just worrying about the balance between the different armors. So far the Chainmail cuirass (light) is the best one I found, and it seems odd to me. Better than the templar vestment. Better than the atrociously heavy rune armor. And I have equal skills in light and heavy armors.

I can say that there are more types that just what you've listed.
I don't want to give spoilers, but as my curiosity got the best of me at one point, I used a certain 3 letter command and ran around a fort slaying those who were obviously stronger than me. I do this whenever I test a new mod to get a feel for the difficulty, to explore for the sake of exploring, and because I have fun role-playing a demi-god from time to time. Anyway, long story short, there is far better light armor. It is silvery, shiny, and gives a minimum bonus of +3 at level 28 light armor.
This leads me to believe that as we get further in the game the armor choices will diversify further.
Also, more armors can always be modded in. The world is more difficult and therefore more important in my opinion.
P.S.: The brutal, honest truth about the armor skills is that as long as they are about the same (EG: Heavy is 26 and Light is 28) armor from the same tier, regardless of type, will have relatively similar defense values until you pass level 45ish. This is, of course, just in my experience.

OK, I noticed there are "vestments", sort of armored robes that give magical bonuses. They seem perfect for my "battlemage" character. Problem is, some are light (like the Mana princess vestment I'm currently wearing), others are classified as heavy armors (like the Templar vestment).
Thus, the question remains the same: which armor skill should I increase? I'd guess there would be more mage-oriented armors in the light category but some exceptions might be too badass to ignore
I remember in vanilla elder scrolls even my mage characters nearly always ended with heavy armors because they would look so good compared to light ones... Is this the same in Nehrim? Would someone know of which type are the best-looking armors (well I know it's a bit subjective but frankly, no armor in oblivion or morrowind could match the style of daedric armor... although the glass armor in morrowind was not far behind)?

I'd just pick both. Put skill points in one and use the console commands to raise the other. It's a single player game, so just do what's fun for you.
Ah, I hadn't thought of the cheat solution, thank you for suggesting that. I guess I'd raise light armor (seems the more logical) and cheatfully raise heavy armor at the same level should I discover later that heavy armor are cooler.
Only one slight flaw in an otherwise cunning plan... what is the console command to change player skill ratings?
