I too am stuck, though I did make it into the room where the Elixir of Mental Strength is.

but when I found the movable pillar, it didn't move and when I turned collision off to see what was behind the wall, there wasn't anything in the little room. I got the shoes and I took the book with the riddle. I also cannot pass the guard in the hall downstairs.

Your answer:

Use TLC to go through the leftmost wine barrel. I'm assuming it was supposed to open with the pillar.
It didn't work for me either, but I noticed one of the barrels seemed to be giving off a red glow. Sure enough the bottles were inside.

There are TWO pillars you have to push. Or does something ingame still claim the opposite?

I did the procedure for getting the nightmare root (frost alcohol salts in blue field, tomatoes in red, hit the lever, light came out), and the light shined from it and all but I can't tell if I harvested anything or not...there's nothing in my inventory called "nightmare root" and there's nothing on or about the root that can be activated, and the green marker for that area is still showing on my map. Giving up on that, trying to search the other part of the palace for the elixir seems impossible as far as I can tell; there are two locked gates I can't get past and I absolutely can't get by that guard to go up the stairs he's facing without being seen even using invisibility. Can someone please advise?

I can upload the savefile if that will help, but I'm unsure of which one...there are several with several filename extensions. Quicksave.ess (most recent)?

edit: O.K. I used TCL to get past the guard...my patience is wearing thin with this quest...and I was able to find and obtain the elixir. However, I still don't have the nightmare root, and when I try to mix the two ingredients I do have in any of the three places for that in the kitchen, nothing happens so I'm assuming nothing will happen until you have all three ingredients. There is nothing I can find on or around that damn root that is harvestable, and the marker for it is still showing on my map. Help anyone?

Another bizarre thing I encountered was that Kim is wandering around and can walk right by that same guard, go up those stairs, and the guard doesn't detect her. She also appears behind locked gates that I can't get through (now that was really annoying). Please help me continue enjoying this awesome conversion!

You still need to activate the harrada-like plant.

There are some locked gates which you cannot get through but you can come around the other way. And as for the guards, try being fast.

There are several things going on here at once. And it is difficult to help you with this quest because there is so much to it. However there is one sure thing you should be doing in terms of getting past at least one of the guards. At one point in your searching, while trying to avoid the guard, you will come across a hole in the wall that is covered buy "rotting boards" and blocked by movable large stone blocks. Have you come across this hole in the wall and used it? If yes, have you also found the rope ladder that takes you down and gives you another way around the guard?

In terms of the nightmare root. I am not sure what is going on for you. In my case there was no "light" that appeared. What is supposed to happen is that after you load the two ingredients into the their respective colored chambers, you are supposed to pull the lever and then what I think is a paralyzing mist of sorts (though I never actually saw that either - just sound) is supposed to be dispensed on to the nightmare root plant adjacent to the machine. This "mist" paralyzes the plant so that you can "activate" the nightmare root plant itself without being knocked over. If you try to activate the plant without having performed this procedure you will know it because the plant will attack you and knock you over. So, after you have pulled the lever, are you attempting to activate the nightmare root itself or no? Are you saying that you have tried to activate (spacebar) the plant but there is no activation icon to allow you to do this? That the plant seems to be a "static' rather than an activatable item?

I can go back and play that section again and give you a detailed walk-through but I am not sure it will help if for some reason your instance is bugged in that the nightmare root isn't, for some crazy reason, able to be activated. You are correct though, you cannot be successful unless you have all three ingredients so there is no point in even going to the kitchen until you have them all. Let me know if you want me to try and write you up a walk-through.

One last thing - the guards can easily be gotten around if you have even them most low level invisibility spell memorized. That has been my experience anyway.

As I mentioned, there is nothing evident on or about the plant that can be activated...no icon or anything appears anywhere on the plant indicating an activation.

I got around the guard issue by using TCL...trying to run or sneak past that one guard was fruitless, I always got detected.

Yes on both counts, but now it's a moot point since I got past the troublesome guard using TCL eventually. I alread got the elixir, now my only problem is obtaining the nightmare root.

I put the items in the relevant colored fields in the Ice Steel machine and it activated. The root emitted some light and the player is then supposed to be able to harvest it. The plant, both before and after activating the paralyzing machine, has never acted aggressively, i.e. it did not attack me and I wasn't aware that it's supposed to be hostile until paralyzed. In any case, there is nothing that I can find to indicate anything can be harvested from it.

Memorized? I already tried using a standard invisibility potion, and it was useless. Even using slow and fast sneak after taking the potion, that guard always detected me no matter what I did. Running past him also failed.

Thanks for the offer to do a walkthrough, but at this point what I really need is the ItemID or whatever it's called for the nightmare root so I can just summon it to my inventory since this part of the quest is obviously bugged for some reason. Can anyone tell me what it is? Thanks for the helpful suggestions!

I used SQT to reveal the quest stage (MQ24), which revealed 32, and it also appeared to show that I'm indeed lacking one item for this stage of the quest. Is it possible to use setstage to set the quest earlier? I tried variously using setstage to 30, 22, even 0 with no apparent effect. Sorry I'm not too familiar with the console codes, and I made sure to make a quicksave before I tried this so I could revert in case something got messed up. Thanks for any help.

I think you broke the nightmare wine by your auto harvest mod. The plant is supposed to be clickable and when you click it, instead of the normal harvesting procedure, a script activates itself. Now you harvested it and it is not clickable anymore.

I think this is solvable by writing "coc giliad", resting in Giliad for 3 days, and then writing "coc mq24ostianpalast" to return to the palace. The plant should respawn this way. Don't auto-harvest it next time.

As for the guards, it is "GetLOS player" that determines whether they find you. If they see you (GetLOS == 1), you have 2.5 seconds to run into hiding (GetLOS == 0), otherwise you lose. Sneaking and invisibility are of no use here.

Ha! I wondered about that. Especially since I kept getting caught sneaking by them slowly with 110 sneak skill. So my invisibility spell meant nothing and it was the fact that since I was confident and moved quickly (because I thought I was invis) that I was successful. Hmph. That's very counter-intuitive and I bet you get a ton of complaints about that.

Interesting, I wondered about the mod affecting it but I'm fairly sure that I tried to harvest it before employing the auto harvest spell but I could be mistaken about that. I seem to recall having difficulty harvesting it to begin with, and employed the auto harvest in order to gain the nightmare root. I'll give your suggestion a shot, thanks so much for the help!

Not a ton, but let me say it this way: you're not the first complaining.

The thing is, our GetLOS is pretty much deterministic (the guards don't quite change their view direction), while sneak mechanics is chance-based. We are not going to replace a deterministic mechanics by a chance-based one. If there would be a nice way to combine them...

Thank you SO MUCH for that, the plant respawned after resting for three days (well 3 days twice actually), and I was able to harvest it and complete the quest.
