Help! I am stuck! I have found the last known position of the soldiers and Captain Dratis says 'This looks bad.... no one's here.' and then nothing happens. When I talk to him, i get the 'I HAVE NO GREETING' error. Help please!

Try looking for a chest near the fireplace and write "Ebru Cahbaet". Basically he should tell this to you. Was he distracted by a fight?

I had trouble determining what to do next. Since it may help someone else, I'll mention a non-spoiler comment. I was able to figure out what to do next by going to the Options->Video and turning the grass distance down to 0, allowing objects to be seen easier.
