I have made it to the Abby. I want to buy the the Hunting books the vendor is selling, but they are 800 a piece, and there is like 8 of them. Coming out of the mine there was another vendor who was selling 3 hunting books. I killed him, to get his books and/or some loot. He had almost nothing. Selling everything I have found so far lets me buy one 1 book, then I am broke. Is there a cheaper way to get them?

I also go the "Thug" and "Bloodied?" achievements. Should I go back to a previous save? Is the game playable as a Thug?

Oh, and I can't find the holy water on the roof.

kind of a dumb question of you to ask... you make money like you do in any game.. and no, you will have to buy them at that price, or somewhat lower depending on your merchandise skills... but you do not HAVE to buy those pricy books now, you're like 0.1% into the game.. just leave and come back later.

As written in the game guide thread, to make money simply loot and sell everything and make sure you set buy/save prices at max through haggle (max being dependant on seller's skills and yours)

The hunting books allow you to get more trophies from animals, which can be sold or used in alchemy. some mobs, like the gorger which you will encounter later, drops a lot of good sellable stuff if you have all the books, allowing you to earn close to 100 gold per gorger. but again... this is for much later in the game. just take your time, money will come in time.

The easiest way to make money is to start collecting plants and then make potions. The hunting skills aren't going to make you anywhere near enough to make them a difference maker. You can buy a mortar and pestle from one of the vendors just outside the starting area. Of course, raiding the dungeons is the best way.

Yep. Alchemy is the easiest way to make money. But, as was stated you are only a little way into the game and you will come across certain items you cannot afford yet. Have patience, explore everything and take whatever is not nailed down.

I do miss the mod I had which made plants disappear, or even better, Autoharvest. I am not a modder, so I can't do the conversion.

You'll notice that the plant dissapearing mod was added later in the mod. The early areas don't remove anything, but some of the latter areas will have the picture change. I imagine this will be fixed by the main modding community before long. There are a number of the high end modders working on converting mods to work for Nehrim. If your favorite mod doesn't support Nehrim and your mod author is still active, put a comment in their thread asking if their mod is convertable or not. Some Nehrim versions are already popping up and more are inevitable. This is a great mod and people will want to tinker with it.

Plants -mostly mushrooms- in dungeons are not removed. IIRC because they are used as light source.
Most plants outside dungeons get removed on harvest, if not that usually the case because you are harvesting things like nectar and not the whole plant.

Crafting is also worth a try if you have the skills for it. Grab a pick axe and drop down some mines, gather some iron ore then forge some weapons with it at a blacksmith's, Make sure to sharpen them too. Self made steel weapons are not only more powerful than the ones bought or dropped, they also sell for a much better price.

Don't forget to haggle too. A lot of the vendors don't seem to have much mercantile skill. Shift aprentice rank one's to 65% and novice ones to 80% and ye'll get a far larger profit from them.

On the hunting note can anyone tell me what books are useful for alchemical effects?
My guess is hearts are gonna be useful(seeing as I have some as loot) any else?
