The influence of Fortnite can now be found in an unexpected place: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Square Enix has revealed that one of the upcoming RPG's major exploration features was inspired by Epic Games' hugely popular battle royale.

Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, explained that Fortnite played a direct role in the development of the game's new Highwind traversal system. The feature allows players to travel through the open world by air before jumping from the iconic airship and parachuting toward their destination.

Fortnite Inspired the Highwind Parachute System

The Highwind has always been an important part of the Final Fantasy 7 experience, but Revelation is giving the legendary airship a much bigger role.

Instead of simply using the Highwind as another form of transportation, players will be able to fly freely across the game's expansive world. When they find an area they want to explore, they can jump from the airship and descend toward the ground using a parachute.

Hamaguchi confirmed that Fortnite was a direct source of inspiration for this mechanic.

The similarity is easy to understand. Fortnite allows players to begin matches by jumping from above the island and selecting their preferred landing area. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation adapts a similar concept to a single-player RPG, allowing players to combine aerial travel with more flexible exploration.

For a game featuring a significantly larger world, the system could also make traveling between distant areas much more convenient.

A New Way to Explore the Final Fantasy 7 World

The expanded scale of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation means that movement is an important part of the overall experience. A huge open world can be impressive, but players also need efficient ways to navigate it.

The Highwind provides that solution. Players can take to the skies, search for points of interest and then descend directly into the area they want to investigate.

This approach could make exploration feel less restrictive than traditional fast-travel systems. Instead of simply selecting a destination from a menu, players can physically fly over the world and decide when and where to land.

It is also an interesting example of how ideas from different gaming genres can influence one another. Fortnite's traversal mechanics were designed around a competitive multiplayer experience, while Revelation is using a similar idea to support exploration in a story-driven RPG.

Could Cloud and Barret Appear in Fortnite?

Hamaguchi was also asked whether Final Fantasy 7 characters could eventually become part of Fortnite.

While there is no confirmed crossover, the director spoke positively about Epic Games and pointed out that Square Enix already has a relationship with the Fortnite team through the Kingdom Hearts collaboration.

However, fans should not take these comments as confirmation of a future Final Fantasy 7 event.

Square Enix is reportedly considering a number of different collaboration opportunities, but Hamaguchi did not reveal whether Fortnite is officially part of those plans. As a result, there is currently no confirmed release date for Final Fantasy 7 skins in Fortnite.

That distinction is important for players who are already expecting Cloud, Tifa or Sephiroth to arrive in the Item Shop.

Barret Could Be the Ideal Fortnite Character

Among the Final Fantasy 7 cast, Hamaguchi specifically mentioned Barret Wallace as a character he could imagine appearing in Fortnite.

Barret would certainly make sense from a gameplay perspective. His mechanical gun arm is one of his most recognizable characteristics, and firearms are already an important part of Fortnite's gameplay.

A Barret outfit could therefore fit naturally into the game's existing visual and gameplay style.

Cloud would likely be another highly anticipated choice, while characters such as Tifa, Aerith and Sephiroth could also generate considerable interest among Fortnite and Final Fantasy fans.

Whether any of them eventually arrive remains unknown.

Fortnite V-Bucks and Future Crossover Content

Fortnite's extensive collaboration history has made limited-time crossover cosmetics an important part of the game's ecosystem. When a major franchise joins Fortnite, players often watch the Item Shop closely for new outfits, accessories and other themed content.

If Final Fantasy 7 eventually receives an official Fortnite collaboration, players could have another major collection of cosmetics to consider.

For players who regularly purchase in-game content, Fortnite V-Bucks remain the primary currency used for many cosmetic purchases. Those comparing ways to manage their Fortnite spending can explore options available through z2u.com, while checking platform and regional requirements before making a transaction.

Likewise, users interested in marketplace-related Fortnite transactions may encounter services connected with Sell Fortnite V-Bucks. Anyone considering such services should carefully review the platform's rules and applicable terms, since Fortnite's official policies and account requirements should always take priority.

No Final Fantasy 7 Fortnite Collaboration Has Been Confirmed

For now, the biggest confirmed connection between the two games is not a character crossover but a gameplay idea.

Fortnite directly influenced the Highwind parachuting mechanic in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, according to Hamaguchi. At the same time, Square Enix has not announced that Cloud, Barret or any other Final Fantasy 7 character will be added to Fortnite.

That could change in the future, especially given Square Enix's existing relationship with Epic Games. But until an official announcement is made, fans should treat the possibility as speculation rather than confirmed content.

The idea of Barret dropping onto the Fortnite island with his gun arm is certainly easy to imagine. Whether that becomes reality, however, is something only Square Enix and Epic Games can confirm.
