I downloaded Nehrim from the GOG site and ran the installer. The game seems to start OK but it crashes frequently occasionally needing to resort to Task manager to kill it.
When I tried to load the construction kit (To see what was going on in case it's script related). I got all sorts of messages about 'clouds' and 'sky' .... etc missing and then the CS crashes or (although cleanly) or hangs forever trying to load.
I also ran into a problems when I tried a quest. Something went wrong and the quest didn't complete so I tried to use the console to terminate it (ShowQuestTargets... CompleteQuest NQ00Meirre ) Despite this ( and every other alternative that I tried) I couldn't get it to terminate and had to exit from the console .... Save, reload, continue didn't help
I normally play games at 'easy' settings and I'm running win11 64 bit with a I5 9400F, 32G ram 1Tb ssd and a Gt1660 graphics card but it's difficult to get to the bottom of problems with so many of the problems conflicting with eachother. The GOG installer doesn't help as it uses its own version numbers so I can't even determine whether my copy is up to date and the installation instructions on this site are aimed at an early version (2010).
Any hints tips would be appreciated.

as long as you're not actively modding the game you don't need the CS.
Nehrim can have its issues but the crashes are not script related
Oblivion (/Nehrim) can't make full use of your system because of it's age (the "4gb patch" is applied though).
try to en-/disable "ENBoost" and "Walk Blessed" in the Launcher settings - some systems just work better with these options than others.
if that doesn't help maybe dial back some of you graphic settings if you're on max settings
(you shouldn't need to play on medium either, just maybe adjust a little)
do you have a save from before starting the quest?
or before entering any commands? what exactly happened?
if you can upload a save we'll see if we can get you on track again

(saves should be found in [...\GOG Galaxy\Games\Nehrim At Fate's Edge GOG\Saves]

we strongly(!) advise against using commands in Nehrim and Enderal since it's super easy to break your quests that way.
(sometimes beyond repair)

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I have wound back the graphics using the default and stability options and it seems to go for longer without crashing. When I reloaded a save from before the quest I was able to get a bit further but one of the 'bricks' in the quest seemed to dissappear (possibly it was jolted to an inaccessible place) . As an experiment I tried the completequest in the console and this time it did seeem to complete. I carried on to the next quest and this time I received a quest target arrow on the map but at the next stage the required component appeared to be missing and the console reported 0 targets available. I have browsed various forums and I have read that there is a bug in the Russian versions that makes some objects 'dissappear'. Do you know the pedigree of the GOG version... it isn't a translation of the russsian one is it?. I have also read that there is a 'fix bugs update' mod for the steam vesrion of the games on nexus. Does this work on the GOG version and would installing it help?

if I'm understanding you correctly you're trying to find soap?
maybe take a look at the wiki page to make sure you're not just missing it.

sadly we don't have specific information about issues with the russian version.
(you could also ask in the russian Nehrim forum in case it really is a missing object)

Thanks for the reply and don't worry about delays. I often don't have time to switch my computers on some days. You are correct, mea culpa, I missed the clues and had already come to that realisation before I read yor reply.
I've played the game for a few days and the tweaks that I mentioned seem to have increased the stability... I can play for over an hour or longer before the game crashes now.
I've also made some progress with other things; I've managed to get the construction set working... at least to the level that it will load the esm. I've not tried any modding yet (I did do some modding on morrowind and oblivion (on the pre steam versions) in the past but the creation kit for skyrim doesn't run on the GOG version )
Thank you again for the help and I will consider this post closed. I'm not sure how to officially close it but I asssume that accepting the answer will do this.
