Stuttering and FPS drops after launching Enderal SE more than once - by copperling

The problem: Severe stuttering and FPS drops (60 to jumping 2-10-30) after launching Enderal more than once, makes the game unplayable. I play Enderal Special Edition through Steam.
I first encountered the issue when I reloaded a save after finding missing terrain near the 'ancient circle of the lost ones' during a modded playthough. This is why I initially thought it was a mod issue. My game went a bit weird after that, like my character T-posing around but this was fixed when I reloaded the save again. Unfortunately, this is also when the FPS dropped to 2-20, and lots of stuttering. I couldn't continue playing because it was so bad.
Attempts to fix/identify issue:
- Cleaned modlist of possible issues, and cleaned save with fallrim tools. Problem persists.
- Started a new game. Problem persists, and is not specific to a particular save.
- Reloaded a save. Problem persisted. No Saves now, since I did a fresh reinstall.
- Reinstalling Enderal SE. Works when I first launch the game to play. Every attempt after that, problem persists.
- Played Vanilla. Confirms not a mod issue, problem persists.
- Deleted ENB. Problem persists.
- Deleted Enderal.ini so a new one could be made when opening Enderal launcher. Seems like fixed problem occasionally, though this feels more coincidental than being a possible cause of the problem because it does not work all the time. Overall - problem persists.
- Checked if it is a hardware issue. I do not have this issue with other games, Skyrim SE seems to work fine as normal. I only have this problem with Enderal. Restarting PC seems to recreate 'first launch' of enderal where everything works as it should. Every launch after that - problem persists. Don't think it's got anything to do with my specs tbh.
- Verified the integrity of game files. After first launch, there's always a few files that have to be reacquired. The more times I launch the game, the more files that have to be reacquired.
- Launcher log seems to not recognise installation status or SKSE:

I suspect your problem is caused by mod leftovers.
I don't know which mods you installed.
Verifying the integrity of game files or a simple new installation doesn´t solve the problem.
The display in the launcher.log is correct (SKSE is still active even if it says "false" !).
A clean install may then initially be required without any mods:
Uninstall Enderal Special Edition and manually delete these remaining folders -in your case- (save existing savegames beforehand, you can copy them back later):
D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Enderal Special Edition
C:\user\"username"\AppData\Local\Enderal Special Edition (there may also be mod leftovers)
C:\user\"username"\Documents\my games\Enderal Special Edition
Then restart Steam / the PC and reinstall Enderal Special Edition.
If the game runs fine after that you can try to reinstall your mods one by one and test which possibly caused the problem.
I don't know which mods you installed.

Ah, I never deleted the folder in AppData when reinstalling. You were right! It was mod leftovers that was causing the issue. Though, launcher log is still saying the same thing - should I be worried?

With the AppData folder, most players don't know

One last word on this:
clean install usually helps based on experience.
It only becomes critical when incompatible mods have already been written to the savegame (
). Most of the time you can't fix it.
Therefore often save manually!

It only becomes critical when incompatible mods have already been written to the savegame (
). Most of the time you can't fix it. Therefore often save manually!

Thank you for your help, but Sorry - I'm back with the problem again ;;
I started experiencing the stuttering again. I can't add anything to the directory, any mod (even if it is just textures/no plugins) or enb without stuttering. Just any additions/changes to the folder seems to cause stuttering. But even after clean install without mods or enb, the low/fps stuttering persists after first launch eventually. I've done clean install several times.
The only thing that works for a while is deleting whatever is in the C:\user\"username"\AppData\Local\Enderal Special Edition (even when playing vanilla after clean install). Another thing that worked was turning off SSETweaks in the launcher. I was able to play normally for a bit, but the stuttering/low fps always come back eventually.
I also occasionally get this message:
"You have encountered a problem which stopped the files from loading correctly. Usually, this problem occurs if the launcher doesn't have writing permission in certain folders which means that some files cant be edited or created..."
I followed the instructions given in the message:
1. Made sure that launcher isn't blocked by windows or third party programs. So I added it as an exception to any security programs I had.
2. Made sure that ForgottenStories.esm in the Data Files are highlighted in the launcher.
Might this have something to do with the kind of mod manager I'm using? I use vortex but never had this kind of problem before, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. But I'm still having problems even without mods after clean install. I think the key is about the launcher not having permission in certain folders - is this maybe an administrator problem? I don't know how to fix it

Do you use several? Multiple antivirus programs always cause problems.
After the last Vortex update, we are not aware of any problems with Vortex.
It really seems to be a write protection problem.
Start the Enderal Launcher.exe, SkyrimSE.exe and skse64_loader.exe as administrator.
Manually deactivate the Windows write protection in all three directories (especially on c: this sometimes causes problems).

The only security program I use is avast, I was also referring to windows defender - My bad, I should've clarified! Okay so, I did as you said:

As for manually deactivating windows write protection, I wasn't sure how to do it but after googling around I did the following:

This seemed to fix the issue!!! I launched it normally like 12 times to see if it wasn't a fluke lol. Hopefully I'm not jinxing myself by saying that it's working now! But for now - it is!! Thanks for your help
