Methods to lessen crashes? - by ArchSublime

Hey guys, just wanting to get some info on crashes. I've always had issues with 32 Skyrim, regardless of mod configuration. Enderal isn't too bad compared to the crashes I get in vanilla Skyrim, but still enough to be an annoyance. Seems particularly bad when loading areas in Ark, but I still get the very occasional crash in other areas, which I've come to expect on the 32 bit engine. I've only got a few extra mods directly from the Enderal section of the nexusmods page, and the few I do have are compatible with the latest version of Enderal as far as I know. None of them change anything within Ark or outside areas.

I actually have to downclock my GPU by 100 MHz on both the memory and core clock to prevent display driver crashes (Which is different than the regular crashes). I have to do this with vanilla Skyrim too, and this is literally the only game I have this problem with (don't have to do this with special edition Skyrim). Also, One Tweak does not seem to help with the regular crashes. I think my GPU just doesn't get along well with 32 bit Skyrim lol.

I should also add that I did a completely fresh install of both Skyrim and Enderal recently following the install guides to the letter. I made sure that I had absolutely no traces of old Skyrim folders before installing.

Anyways, I'll leave my specs below.
GTX 980
16GB DDR4 @3200 MHz
i7 7700k @4.20 GHz

I've also got everything including Windows 10 installed on my 850 Evo SSD for faster load times, which they are definitely faster than when I played Enderal last year on my old build.

If anyone has any suggestions for mods or settings that helps lower the crashes, please feel free to share!

welcome to the forum :)

you might want to check out ENBoost.
works like a charm (if there's no other problem than "expected crashes" ;) )

and OneTweak seems to work for some people and worsen the problem for others.
so maybe turn it off if it doesn't work for you :)

If you understand German here is a good short guide to ENBoost.
You can, for example, also use the Google translator (I know that's not perfect...).

Thanks for the replies! I will definitely check out EnBoost.

@urst:
Yeah I turned off One Tweak after I realised it wasn't helping. I'll do some testing with EnBoost today and post back if it does help.

Well that seemed to help with crashes relating to loading, but I'm still having those persistent random CTD's that can happen just by looking around or walking. Some seem to happen in almost the same spots (near the alchemy crafting station in the Sun Temple alchemy store, for example.) I decided to try and check the crash logs out in SKSE/CrashDumps, but I have no clue what any of this means!

I'm going to post the contents of the most resent crash from earlier. This one of those crashes that took place inside the alchemy/magic shop in the Sun Temple:

in that case the chrashes aren't completely random.

what mods do you have installed?
best would be to disable them, one by one.

and could you upload a savegame?
found in ...\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Saves,
we'll need the skse and the ess of a manual (no quick- or auto-) save,
pack them to a rar or zip archive and attach them to a post here :)

I played a few more hours last night and only had one crash, which is much better than before! I made some additional changes to the enblocal.ini that were outlined in that guide link that Kermit 61 posted, and I think they really helped. The seemingly random crashes have more or less stopped, so now I just need to find the cause of the other ones.

I'll gladly attach a game save and my mod list too (I just attached two screenshots of my mod list)

well, one crash within several hours seems even sort of okayish :)

edit
if it's random crashing -
if there's a pattern we have to work on that ;)

Oh, no doubt. I dunno why I never tried out ENBoost years ago. I always assumed it was just a way to apply graphical changes/enhancements that would only increase instability, rather than the opposite. I figured I'd go along with what you posted previously just in case there was an obvious problem you guys could see in my save files or mod list. But if all looks good, that's fantastic! I greatly appreciate the help too
