I've just started having this issue too. I've been playing for a few days without any problems and then suddenly the sword textures turn into exclamation points. Nothing has changed in between the time when it was fine to when this arose. I reinstalled Nehrim and that fixed it for a couple playing sessions and then it became messed up again. Now I could keep reinstalling, but that's a ridiculous solution.
