TheHawk: Like crpgnut, I don't spam stats or anything like that. I try to avoid exploits and things that feel like cheats (e.g., spamming stats, shooting at enemies who can't reach me, using paralysis/invisibility/some of the more overpowered Destruction spells more than once per battle) and play as naturally as possible (e.g., avoiding metagaming, not taking things from the crates and barrels in the middle of towns - which is mostly trash and not worth the time it takes to go through them, anyway)). I rarely use scrolls, potions, or poisons, prefer to spend more time in the gameworld rather than sifting through the inventory. I think it mostly has to do with exploring a lot and thus leveling and finding good equipment; I've had to cut down on that quite a bit to get more out of the main quest.

Though I did, since last posting, run into a Mr. M. Burster, a unique creature who gave me a run for my money ;), as well as some dungeons with tricky clusters of enemies.

MoloMowChow: Vanilla Nehrim has an experience point-based system; it gives you experience points for solving quests, killing creatures, finding locations, and picking locks, and there are no major/minor skills. Plus, unlike Oblivion, there's no level-scaling of enemies, so it matters much less whether you get high or low multipliers. You do, however, still get bonus points at each level based on skill increases that occur outside of training, so yes, you have to grind skills in order to maximize stats at each level-up. I wouldn't recommend doing that; you'd get too powerful too fast, and a lot of the fun in Nehrim comes from the challenging encounters that you can find due to the lack of level-scaling.
