Pure Mage viable?

I devoted countless hours in a modded Oblivion as a pure mage, and had more fun than I thought possible.
How viable do you think a pure mage is in Nehrim?
By pure mage, I mean a mage who has devoted himself to the study of magic, and is physically frail yet powerful in the ways of spellcraft. No swords, armor or other weapons. Points going almost exclusively into intelligence and willpower. No strength, endurance, etc.
In Oblivion, it was doable mostly because of the conjuration line, which allows the poor mage to summon minions to keep the enemies occupied while he smashes them with spells.
But in Nehrim, without any summons, I'm worried I'm going to be doing nothing but running in circles to keep from getting pounded. And I've never pictured Gandalf as running backwards while flinging fireballs at goblins. I'm not into the whole kiting thing.
So is this worth it? Or should I just give in and go sword/shield with a few utility spells under my belt?
