Received the "Wanted in Ark" bounty for "The Strangler" and immediately obtained the next quest for "Ora Millendance".
Tried getting to the location (Farmer's Coast) by Scroll from inside the (Marketplace) Player House.
By Scroll from outside the house.
Via a Myrad ride from inside Ark's South Quarter.
Finally by walking all the way.

The problem is that at a certain point the Quest Marker moves from pointing to the real quest target to a tall ladder further up the coast (to the North) which has "Farmer's Coast" as the destination. (An interesting aside is that if you actually climb down to the shore and go up that ladder and back down the quest marker will update itself and now be correct!)

That (certain) point is reached (in the first 3 cases above) during the transfer so it's impossible to tell exactly where, but when walking I've narrowed it down fairly closely.

The attached savegame is on the main road a short distance from Bridgehead Farm. Note that the quest marker is correct at that point, just West of North.

If you were to continue to the junction (by the signpost) then save (full or quick), then after reloading that save the pointer is correct.

If you continue to the junction, turn right (North) then turn left at HoneyBrewery (head for the Myrad tower) you will see the quest marker "jump" to the incorrect location as you get close to the tower.

Alternatively, turn right (North) and continue up the road a short distance then stop by the sign for Hafner's Farm Shop. The pointer is curently correct. Save (full or quick) then reload that save. Pointer is now incorrect (slightly East of North and pointing to the ladder noted above.

TBH It's not really a massive problem but it's really odd behaviour and would be better fixed than not (if you can ;)). Can create a bug report if required (basically a copy/paste from above as most of it is relevant).

No mods - vanilla game.

I can't influence how the engine calculates the shortest path towards the quest target, so that's nothing that can be fixed and isn't even a bug in the first place.

The calculations and the "jump" of the quest marker are mathmatically correct. The engine searches for the shortest path on the navmesh (invisible little triangles which determine where the NPCs can walk and where they can't) towards the target and not via a "direct line from the player to the target".

The calculations of the engine probably determine that the way when taking a left at the junction is the shortest towards to the tower, even when following the right way up for a good while and that's why it still shows the quest marker directly at the tower. At some point at the top of the hill the calculations come to the conclusion that now taking the ladder is shorter than walking all the way back and taking a left at the junction. When that happens the quest marker jumps towards the ladder.

That happens because there is no navmesh on the cliff down towars the beach, NPCs have no way to deal with the cliff. If you would have a NPC follower and you would you have jumped down the cliff, the NPC would have gone either to the ladder or all the way back to the junction and taken the path on the left to be able to follow you.

This kind of behaviour shouldn't happen all that often, but that's why quest markers can "jump" when taking off-road paths or when walking towards the target in a direct line while actually increasing the distance between you and the target on the navigable/passable terrain for NPCs.
