Blizzard is an AOE freeze spell(but only 10%)
If you want Higher chances just use lower rank spells and spam more
OR use paralyze
There is also inflame that is like a curse of suffering AOE

On the hunting note can anyone tell me what books are useful for alchemical effects?

My thoughts is that they place quest markers strategically to quest that would be to difficult otherwise
For example on the Giliad rescue operation if they didn't place a quest marker on the basket it would be hell,and things are placed in the cardinal directions or can be easily found are left ...

Generally staffs are intended for mages and you can wear heavy armor and be a turtle mage or a light armor and be a flexible mage(which you should if you have a staff)
Without Blade/Blunt however you're not going to kill very much with blades/blunt,and without Heavy Armor your not going to turtle ...
