Turns out there are two dogs in the village. When I went back to the dog, it was labeled "Dog". I looked around, found Thorus, closed out the quest and eventually finished the saddest quest ever. My thanks for your help once again!

I, too, have been unable to complete this task. I have tried increasing the sprint speed to 150 but without any benefit. I can get the third stick into place before the first one breaks.
