Thanks. Did all that (to the letter) and it produced the same result. Only thing I wasn't sure was whether I was supposed to "archive" and then "restore" or just delete and then reinstall. I chose the latter because I didn't want to lose my savegames, but perhaps that's unavoidable (I hope not).
Thanks - just tried that. DLed the pack, unzipped it and pasted it into the Skyrim folder replacing the original and ran the launcher again with the same result, save weirdly now the "Skyrim has stopped working" or whatever the error message was has now disappeared - I just get dumped on the desktop ...
